SEMINAR "NEUROMORPHIC AND NEUROHYBRID SYSTEMS"

07/22/2018 - 07/27/2018

Seminar "Neuromorphic and neurohybrid systems" on the topic of the laboratory (within the framework of the symposium "Volga Neuroscience Meeting - 2018")

From 22 to 27 July 2018, International Symposium on Neurosciences «Volga Neuroscience Meeting» (VNM-2018), organized by the UNN, was held on board the Mikhail Frunze motor ship, cruising between Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Kazan.

An important event of the symposium was a special section on neuromorphic and neurohybrid systems, dedicated to scientific problems associated with the development and hardware implementation of electronic devices and systems that simulate the functionality of biological neural network architectures and their elements, as well as intended for interfacing with living cells of neurons and living neural networks.

The section was opened by a two-hour lecture by Professor Leon Chua on the history of the discovery of the memristor, the main properties and various manifestations of the memristive effect, which was presented at the plenary session on the first day of the symposium. Leon Ong Chua is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, an eminent American scientist and engineer who gained world-wide fame for his fundamental work in the theory of nonlinear circuits, cellular neural networks (developed, including with the participation of the Nizhny Novgorod School of Nonlinear Dynamics) and theoretically substantiated in the 70 In the early 20th century, the existence of the memristor and the memristive effect as a universal phenomenon in artificial and natural systems.

During subsequent sessions of the section, speakers from Korea, Italy, Germany, Serbia and Russia presented 12 high-level oral and 6 poster presentations on a wide range of memristive materials (organic, inorganic, two-dimensional materials), as well as on prototypes of neuromorphic and neurohybrid systems based on memristors. At the end of the symposium, the section participants were able to directly get acquainted with the results of the scientific teams of UNN, obtained at the junction of nano- and neurotechnologies.

Leon Chua's visit to Russia is of great importance for the formation of a Russian research and production consortium (memristive community), the organization of comprehensive research and development aimed at solving urgent problems of artificial intelligence and medicine.
The excellent reviews left by Professor Chua on the results of the trip indicate a high expert assessment of the scientific and technical results obtained at UNN together with partner organizations, and contribute to the wider world recognition of Russian scientific schools.
